Better Giving Nonprofit Spotlight : The PH8 Foundation

Posted: July 5, 2024

We caught up with Gordon Zhou, a co-founder of the PH8 Foundation, to discuss how online giving has helped in countries from El Salvador to Ghana, and how Better Giving can help you and them!

What is the main activity of the PH8 Foundation?

We support Clean Water & Sanitation & Education projects in El Salvador, Ghana and Nepal.

Take a look at the impact in Ghana by watching this short video

What’s your role, and how did you get involved with digital or online giving? What’s been your experience to date?

I’m Gordon Zhou, the Co-Founder of the NGO. We’ve been using Better Giving and this program from the very beginning (ie. Angel Protocol) The overall experience has been wonderful and extremely helpful!

Had you ever used endowments before? Or ever thought of using them? If not, why not? If yes, how could they – and in particular, the Better Giving Sustainability Fund – help?

Yes! The Better Giving Sustainability fund is truthfully a revolutionary tool for NGO’s like PH8 Foundation.

We operate as a 100 % charity model ie. Every amount of funds received goes straight to the projects. Nothing we keep for ourselves.

As pioneers in this new space, the last years have thrown up some challenges, but otherwise, how has the Better Giving experience been so far? Can you share a success story or a notable impact though the funds raised via Better Giving?

The last couple of years have been rough! I’m sure most NGO’s were really going through it while it was Covid/ the Crypto market crash. Primarily donations slowed down extremely.

But in a better light, Better Giving helped us get back on our feet and helped remind me and the team that the work is never done , and helped aligned us back to our overall purpose.

How do you think Better Gving will be able to benefit your nonprofit in the future?

One problem I see with the “100% charity model” is the sustainability of funding.

It can very stressful at times but Better Giving is solving a major solution to this problem many NGO face and I see great things with this revolutionary service !
Many NGO’s can continue the work we love to do without ever stressing about FUNDING again!!

Can you share a fun fact about your team or an inspiring story from your work?

If you’re new into this space one piece of advice I can give is that when you operate in a place of giving (Always serving others) many opportunities will be revealed!

There were plenty of times in my journey in the “beginning stages” of PH8 that we often asked “How would we receive money to execute our projects?”.

And then at such times when we focused on how we can just give back,  our “get back” was always met because of this action.

Do you have any advice for others thinking of starting an online donation programme?

This is a NO BRAINER. The Better Giving sustainability program is a tool every NGO needs to have in their services.

Do you have any specific projects coming up? Or immediate plans for using the funding?

Absolutely! We’ve actually used a very small piece of the funding to provide a whole library for a school in El Salvador!

The rest of the funding as of right now we plan to either
  1. Build a playground for the school in El Salvador and/or
  2. Add on this funding for a very large scale project of providing clean water filtration for 80-100 schools in Nepal.
